Helping to promote a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly alternative form of transportation for the residents of Carol Stream.

What people want

One of the main goals of Carol Stream Bikes is to advocate for the most wanted bicycle infrastructure improvements. In order to do this, we need to find out what people want.

One of the ways to do this is through a community survey. On May 22, 2010, I handed out brief surveys to residents asking them, "If you could bike anywhere, where would you go?", as well as "Where do you live"? The following is a summary of the responses.

Informal bicycle survey

27 surveys were received. The respondents mostly lived near Armstrong Park (4), or Western Trail School (4). 3 respondents lived by Evergreen School, with a handful of out-of-town responses. Overall, the responses were split evenly between west of County Farm Road and east of County Farm Road.

Following are the top 3 desired locations to bike to, in each category surveyed:

Elementary Schools Middle Schools High Schools Trails Parks Other
Western Trails (9) Jay Stream (8) Glenbard North (4) Illinois Prairie Path (6) Armstrong Park (19) Library (10)
Carol Stream (4) Benjamin (4) Wheaton North / Community / Bartlett (1 each) Great Western Trail (4) Cosley Zoo (10) Town Center (9)
Evergreen (4) Stratford / Monroe-Franklin (1 each)   Fox River Trail (3) Simkus Center (8) Stratford Square (8)

Map

At an earlier event, I asked respondents directly which streets they wanted to see as bicycle routes. The map follows, with further explanation below the map.

Legend

8-10' wide asphalt trails -- suitable for bicycle routes   10' wide limestone screening trails -- suitable for bicycle routes
Cut-through sidewalks -- useful for shortening trips, possibly as bicycle routes    Resident-recommended bicycle paths. Brighter lines indicate more support.
