The most popular reason adults get on a bicycle is for recreational purposes. Whether it's to feel the wind through your hair, get in a good cardiovascular workout, or just to get the kids tired, any of these reasons are the perfect reason to get on a bike. So where should you go?
The Lies Road Bicycle Trail is an excellent trail for a short excursion. At 2.7 miles from end to end, it will only take the average bicyclist 15 minutes to travel its blacktop surface from one end to the other.
At mile 0.0 (the west end), cross Fair Oaks Road and enter the West Branch Forest Preserve on a limestone trail. Watch out for turtles that tend to sun themselves on the limestone path! A marshy area near the beginning of this trail tends is the home for a Blue Heron, while Deep Quarry Lake at the northern portion of this trail is an often-used fishing area for local residents.
The Lies Road Trail also takes you past the Simkus Recreational Center at mile 1.3. Horses make their residence at the yellow dot barn near mile 1.7, and Carol Stream's historic farmhouse is on the north side of the trail at mile 2.5, just before reaching the Town Center.
At the Town Center, you can cross Lies Road and make your way towards Armstrong Park. Or, have a stop at one of the many places to eat in the Fountain View shops. The Chocoberry Cafe has bubble tea and iced coffee to cool you down. The Hot Spot hot dog shoppe serves hot dogs and burgers, along with a wide selection of bottled sodas. Bel Gustos serves both Italian and Mexican fare, but if you prefer bar food, head on over to Flip Flops.
